BOWED PEACE.
Between 1979 until the mid 1980's I produced a number of what were then called 'performance installation works'.
They were based upon task operations using the body, fabricated materials of all kinds, sounds and images.
In effect, they were inter-media works. Bowed Peace was the last of these.
Here are the notes which accompanied the original programme.
The letter is placed upside down, so that the body must be contorted in order for it to be read. This requires the full body weight to be supported by the arms.
The heart is connected to a device which strikes the bow string in real time, monitoring the physical effort exerted to read the letter.
A mix of ten octaves of pre-recorded heart beat is continually played from a small speaker suspended above the solar plexus. It is silenced only when the body is raised to read.
The entire system is self-perpetuating, forming a closed cycle of monitored physical effort, expended in an attempt at personal communication.
