COLLEEN and JOHN@PATURAU.1998.
I was recently looking through some DAT field recordings from the 1990's (searching for a particular, dimly remembered recording of a chorus of cicadas) when I stumbled upon this material.
Listening to it brought back forgotten intense dialogues between Colleen and myself centred around my work. At the time, it was just business as usual, nothing remarkable (although we must have decided to record these particular interactions).
The atmosphere inside the tent in which we are sheltering, and the domestic nature of our activities puts me in mind of what an audio recording of cave dwellers from paleolithic times (sitting around their fire, discussing the in's and out's of their latest attempts at cave art) might sound like.
Apart from containing a plethora of information about my working processes and broader aesthetic and philosophical attitudes, these files show how important our connection was in my growth as an artist.
Colleen's willingness and ability to function as a focused sounding board for my ideas and endeavours (quite apart from her direct assistance as a camera person) were absolutely essential to my subsequent development.

I have left the files almost untouched. Consequently there are various untidy repetitions and re-visitings. They were recorded inside our tent, very close to the high tide mark, and in the final dialogue, with a gusty South Westerly periodically cracking the canvas.
