Probably the first serious composition I attempted after student works. I had just begun to teach at Canterbury University, and was privileged to know Anthea Moller and Dobbs Franks, two individuals who gave me enormous support and encouragement at that time.
I AM NO PLANET
I am no planet, nothing in the sky describes me.
Cognizant of this I climb impossible mountains of my mind
To reach the firmament in the eye

WATERMELON HOURS
In watermelon hours, when being was easy,
Was as easy as random daisies grew,
The sun told time without ticking, and rain was fun if it fell on you.
But that was all before Pandora found the swarm of practicalities that taught her
Umbrellas were essential and flowers didn't really matter.

MUSCLES OF THE SUN
Muscles of the sun flex, stretch.
He runs like a horse. Full gallop my desire
rides him bareback.
