Three Songs 1970.
For me, sourcing personal experience as the ground for making work began very early in my creative life and has remained my natural starting point.
These three songs refer to the pain of a difficult relationship, the effects of personal hurt, and the restrictive nature of social expectations.
The singer is Anthea Moller (a larger than life influence on my early musical life), the pianist Bruce Greenfield.
The poetry is my own.
(Apologies for the technical quality. The original tapes of these recordings were never made available to me.)

FEEL.
Feel the surge, choking on a space
Crying, dumb encumbered.
Straining.
Stitch tight the knot, yet never done.

HER TEARS.
Her tears reflect the light, bright in their agony.
Essential darkness never seemed so pristine clear.
But Look!
Deep in the glittering expanse of her soul
There still remains a drowning.

Deep in the glittering expanse of her soul
There still remains a drowning.

THE FORTIFIED GROOM.
The fortified groom stands numb-fudged and floor-footed.
The embryo stirs beneath white lace.
The specimen friends laugh, hollow felicitations.
The parents are present.
The parson, a tent of black, clutches the book, mind aghast.
The translucent confetti of human understanding is trudged underfoot
Sacrificed to Society.
